Fashion magazines are always harping on about how accessories are a cheap way to bring a plain or old outfit bang up to date. They're half right - they do complete a look and can pull you out of the dark ages a bit, but most of the accessories I like the look of cost more than the rest of my outfit put together.
As part of the Autumn/Winter wardrobe quest I've been looking for interesting but cheap accessories, and I think I've found plenty. First up, Matalan: most of it's tat, but they do have some good 60s inspired chunky black and white plastic necklaces, and some spot-on goldtone cuffs. It's surprisingly similar to a lot of stock in TopShop. but less than half the price.
Next up: good old M&S. They have taken heed of the cheap and cheerful wants of high street shoppers and made a range of chunky berets, beanie hats, pretend-cashmere scarves, elbow-length fingerless gloves and the like, all priced at around a fiver. The colours are chartreuse, purple, rust, turquoise, camel and so on. Very good!
Peacocks: Their bags are awful, but look out for little velvet caps for £4, and a few nice shoes. Best wellies I ever saw - sepia coloured, with 1950s tattoo designs (skulls, red roses etc) all over them, in store for £16. Some fingerless gloves etc for £3. Scarves not so nice.
Primark: berets for £2 in camel and grey. Plain cotton shawls in bright colours for £2.50.
New Look: Really horrible jewellery and bags, but they do have sequinned loose knit cotton berets for £6 that look amazing for the price.
Any more tip-offs?
